In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased in auction the Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac, and renames it Château Mouton Rothschild, which will be ranked second Grand Cru Classé in 1855.
In 1922, Philippe de Rothschild took control of the domain and is fully involved: it will be the architect of the resurrection of the Castle. The year 1924 marks the first bottling in the castle (a first in the Bordeaux region).
In 1973, the only review ever conducted of the classification of 1855 devoted Mouton to the rank of first Grand Cru.
